HBO Max today raised the price of all three plans, effective immediately for new subscribers and effective around November 20 for existing ones.
The $9.99 a month ads-included Basic plan is now $10.99 a month. The $16.99 a month no-ads Standard plan is now $18.49 a month and the Premium plan, which also does not include ads and has 4K programming, rises from $20.99 a month to $22.99 a month.
David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns HBO Max, tipped the price hike last September in a talk with financial analysts:
“The fact that this is quality, and that’s true across our company, motion picture, TV production and streaming quality, we all think that gives us a chance to raise price,” Zaslav told the Goldman Sachs conference. “We think we’re way underpriced. We’re going to take our time.”
HBO Max last raised its prices in June 2024. The monthly ads-free Standard plan increased from $15.99 a month to $16.99 a month. The Premium ads-free plan also increased $1 a month from $19.99 a month to $20.99 a month. The ads-included plan stayed the same at $9.99 a month.
Today’s price increase follows an industry trend with companies struggling to generate profits on their investment in streaming services. Hulu, Disney and ESPN+ also raised prices today although the increase was announced last month.
