TV Answer Man, do you know if you can still get MLB TV for 50 percent off if you donate to the player alumni association? – Rip, Dallas.
Rip, Major League Baseball yesterday began taking orders for MLB TV for the 2025 season, the league’s streaming package of out-of-market games. The price is $149.99, which is the same as last year.
The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association has offered 50 percent off MLB TV for everyone who makes a contribution of $25 or more. That would bring the MLB TV regular price of $149.99 to just $100 when you add $25 for the MLBPAA donation. That’s a 33 percent savings overall. (You can also deduct your MLBPAA contribution on your taxes.)
New Policy For MLB TV’s 50 Percent Discount
However, the alumni group last year made a change to its policy. The 50 percent discount was only available to MLBPAA members who were renewing their annual fees. Unfortunately, it appears that the new policy is staying in place.
“MLB.TV 50 percent discount can only be utilized by renewing members,” the MLBPAA web site states. “Members will receive information to redeem a unique discount code in March 2025. One unique code per member provided during the calendar year upon renewal. Available while supplies last for active MLBPAA members only for the 2025 regular season.
Why Did the MLBPAA Policy Change?
My educated guess is that too many people were using the MLBPAA donation perk to get the MLB TV discount so the players association was forced to restrict the eligibility. The league likely concluded that it was losing significant revenue from the MLBPAA discount offer.
So if you didn’t get MLB TV through MLBPAA last year, you’ll now have to pay full price for the plan.
Why Should You Donate to the MLBPAA?
Despite the restriction, I encourage you to contribute to the alumni association which has been enormously helpful to cash-strapped older players who played at a time when salaries were relatively low. To learn more about the MLBPAA, click here.
