YouTube TV to Launch 10 Genre Plans – What Will They Be?

TV Answer Man, I like your new format with the daily show picks but I have a question that’s a little different. YouTube TV says it will have 10 cheap genre plans next year. How will they actually do 10 genres? Are there actually 10 to do? – Claire, New Haven, Connecticut.

Claire, thanks for the kind words. Yes, YouTube TV announced earlier this month that it plans to launch more than 10 less expensive genre plans in early 2026 including one package that will be dedicated to national sports channels. The genre plans will be cheaper because they will include fewer channels than the traditional pay TV bundle.

The streamer did not reveal pricing, a specific launch date or the 10 plus categories that will make up the genre plans. And that left many asking questions including what kind of genre packages will be offered.

Seriously, more than 10? Is that possible?

Here’s my best guess on what they will be:

I think we can take a hint from DIRECTV on roughly half of the genre categories. The TV provider’s streaming unit now offers genre packages for sports, news, entertainment, Spanish-language programming, and children’s shows. Those cover the top interests of viewers and it makes sense that YouTube TV would offer them as well.

As for the other five plus, my guess is that they include:

Movies (TCM, FXM, etc.)
Reality (WeTV, HGTV, etc.)
Comedy (Comedy Central, Comedy.TV, etc.)
African-American (BET, BET Her, etc.)
True Crime (Discovery, ID, Court TV, Law & Crime, etc.)

All five are popular now with viewers and could generate a significant number of lower-cost subscriptions. You might also see YouTube TV drill down further with Romance (think Hallmark, etc.) Horror, and Sci-fi, also hot TV categories now.

Bottom Line: There is a market for multiple genres thanks to the growing splintering of the American TV audience. If YouTube TV is able to offer attractive price points, it can use the genre plan concept to soon surpass Comcast’s Xfinity and Charter’s Spectrum TV as the nation’s number one pay TV service.
