HBO Max plans to remove 50 movies after December 31, 2025. Here are the three to watch before they leave, in my humble opinion:

Pearl An X-traordinary Origin Story (2022)
Mia Goth stars as an unhinged young woman whose unrelenting ambition to become a movie star leads to a bloodbath on a Texas farm in 1918. Pearl, a prequel to director Ti West’s X may be the superior film here with Goth delivering one of the best and hypnotic performances of the decade. (Martin Scorsese calls Pearl “mesmerizing” and, as usual, he is right.)

Gone Girl (2014)
Gone Girl is the brilliant 2014 film from director David Fincher about a wife (Rosamund Pike) who fakes her disappearance to frame her philandering husband (Ben Affleck). No one does the dark side of humanity better than David Fincher and his exceptional skills are on full display here. And Pike is captivating as the damsel in distress.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Bradley Cooper (pictured above with Jennifer Lawrence) shines in this David O. Russell comedy/drama film as a bipolar teacher named Pat who loses his grip on reality after seeing his wife having sex with a fellow teacher. Once out of a mental institution, Pat attempts to rebuild his life but is soon thrown a curve by a curvaceous young widow (Jennifer Lawrence) whose hold on reality is equally suspect. Cooper and Lawrence are wonderful together in this dysfunctional romcom and Robert De Niro is a hoot as Pat’s mentally uncertain father who lives and dies with the hometown Philadelphia Eagles. Silver Linings Playbook is a great movie that will make you smile, laugh and cry.
