DIRECTV’s Plan to Keep New Price Hike Quiet Isn’t Going So Well

TV Answer Man, I read your article on DIRECTV refusing to tell you about its new price increase. That is bizarre! Do they really think people won’t find out? LOL. – Carl, Scottsdale, Arizona.

Scott, I hear you. DIRECTV announced at its web site on Friday that it was changing its pricing on October 5, 2025 – which, of course, means that prices are going up on that date. But DIRECTV did not reveal the actual price hikes at the site. And when The TV Answer Man asked for a list of the new prices, a DIRECTV spokeswoman refused, saying the company would provide the information to subscribers directly.

It was clear to this reporter, one who has covered DIRECTV for more than three decades, that it was trying to keep the price increase quiet to minimize negative publicity.

However, if that is the plan, it’s not working.

Since Friday, numerous DIRECTV subscribers have rushed to social media sites to complain about the increase. (You can see a partial list of the price increases in our article here; we obtained the information from readers who sent us e-mails after getting a communication from DIRECTV.)

And the financial web site, TheStreet.com, noticed the posts and yesterday published an article saying that DIRECTV subscribers are threatening to quit.

“DIRECTV has warned impacted customers of these pricing changes via email, and many took to social media platform Reddit to express frustration over their services becoming more expensive, with some threatening to switch providers,” the article states.

“I’m definitely leaving. They took my free Max away about a year or so ago. These new prices aren’t worth it. New customers are starting to have better pricing,” wrote one customer, according to The Street.

As I noted in my article last Friday, DIRECTV would be wise to publish the full list of its price increases at its site – as it has done for years when it raises prices, which is every year. By not publishing the rate hikes, the company is failing on two fronts: it looks like it’s trying to hide something and the plan to keep that something quiet isn’t working.

Carl, I hope that answers your question. Happy viewing and stay safe!
