By Phillip Swann
The TV Answer Man – Buy Me a Coffee!
Netflix posts a daily Top 10 list of the TV series that are most popular with its subscribers on that day. Let’s take a look at today’s (January 14, 2026) top shows and see how many you have watched.
10. Prodigal Son (Two seasons)
What Kind of Show: Procedural Drama
Who’s In It: Tom Payne, Lou Diamond Phillips
The Fox-produced series stars Tom Payne as a NYPD profiler who can see murders from the view point of the killer because his father was a serial killer. (Don’t say I never gave you anything, sonny boy.) The number 10 ranking is more evidence that serial killer shows are catnip to the Netflix audience.
9. Emily In Paris (Seasons 1-5)
What Kind of Show: Comedy
Who’s In It: Lily Collins
Lily Collins stars as Emily Cooper, the American ingenue who moves to Paris to teach a Parisian marketing firm a few things about American ingenuity. Or so she thinks. Along the way, she encounters irresistible Parisian men, confounding language barriers and other obstacles that only Emily could find. The Netflix original comedy is a feel-good delight with Collins a revelation in the title role; her performance is a throwback to those classic comedic single-woman turns from the 1960s/70s (Mary Tyler Moore in The Mary Tyler Moore Show; Marlo Thomas in That Girl, etc.).
8. Unlocked: A Jail Experiment (Two seasons)
What Kind of Show: Reality/Documentary
Who’s In It: Criminals
The show casts the cameras on an Arkansas prison where 46 prisoners are allowed to live without cell locks or other normal security protocols. The ‘experiment’ is to determine whether the men will take greater responsibility for their actions if they are given more autonomy. It’s obviously working with the Netflix audience; must be a serial killer in the bunch.
7. Stranger Things (Seasons one to five)
What Kind of Show: Supernatural Drama
Who’s In It: Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown
If you’re not familiar with Stranger Things by now, the show, which stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour and Millie Bobby Brown, follows a mysterious young girl (Brown) who opens a pathway between Earth and a hostile (very hostile) alternate dimension called the Upside Down. A band of teenagers assist the clueless adults in restoring order in our world. (Season five, the series finale, ended on December 31, 2025.)
6. Harlan Coben’s Run Away (One season)
What Kind of Show: Mystery/Drama
Who’s In It: James Nesbitt, Ruth Jones
The eight-episode British-made TV series, based on a Harlan Coben novel, stars James Nesbitt as a Dad who searches for his runaway daughter. Rotten Tomatoes gives the show a 78 score; I haven’t seen it yet but it’s been in the top 10 now for more than week so it must be good.
5. Monday Night RAW (Seasons 1-2)
What Kind of Show: Athletic Entertainment
Who’s In It: WWE wrestlers, special guests
Netflix is now in its second year of streaming WWE Monday Night RAW which has featured such wrasslin’ warriors as John Cena, Cody Rhodes, CM Punk and Roman Reigns as well as YouTuber Logan Paul (brother to Jake). The show is live but its number five ranking suggests many viewers like to watch it and rewatch it.
4. Marcello Hernandez: American Boy
What Kind of Show: Comedy Stand-up Special
Who’s In It: Marcello Hernandez
The Saturday Night Live cast member gives his wry observations on everything from his Latino roots to his Mom’s life lessons.
3. Kill Tony: Once Upon a Time In Texas
What Kind of Show: Comedy Competition
Who’s In It; Tony Hinchcliffe
Podcaster Tony Hinchcliffe and some comedic colleagues provide a showcase for unknown comics to do one-minute stand-ups.
2. 11.22.63
What Kind of Show: Sci-fi Thriller
Who’s In It: James Franco, Chris Cooper
Based on the Stephen King novel, 11.22.63 stars James Franco as a high school teacher who magically is offered an opportunity to go back in time to stop the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Once there, however, he discovers that history can be a stubborn thing – and he could be trapped in a time warp. The eight-episode series, which first ran on Hulu, is a lesson from the book of the proverbs: Be careful what you wish for. If you’re old enough to remember the halcyon days of the 1960s – and the old Twilight Zone episodes – this one is for you.
1. His & Hers
What Kind of Show: Mystery/Thriller
Who’s In It: Tessa Thompson, Jon Bernthal
Based on the Alice Feeney novel, Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal (pictured above) play a reporter and detective respectively who investigate a small town murder. The plot thickens when the two begin to suspect each other, which gets even messier when you discover they were once married to each other. “There are two sides to every story: his and hers, which means someone is always lying,” Netflix says coyly in its program description. If you’re a true crime fan, or just love a good mystery, this looks irresistible; all six episodes debuted on January 8.
