Amazon’s Prime Video over the weekend added 59 new movies and TV shows to its streaming lineup. Here are the four to watch, in my humble opinion:
Blow Out (1981)
This haunting Brian DePalma-directed drama stars John Travolta as an accidental investigator of a presidential assassination with DePalma’s then wife, Nancy Allen, playing a clueless accessory. This is arguably DePalma’s finest work as he taps into the conspiratorial vibe that still haunted the nation in the early 80s after the political assassinations of the 1960s and the Watergate/intelligence scandals of the 1970s. Travolta is also sensational as the B movie soundman who’s seen and heard enough.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Director Quentin Tarantino’s non-linear masterpiece weaves interconnected stories of crime, wit, and dark humor as only he could. And what a cast! Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Ving Rhames, Christopher Walken…it just goes on and on. Pulp Fiction, which has often been copied, even to some degree by Tarantino himself, should be in anyone’s list of the top 10 best movies ever. And if you disagree, allow me to retort!
Raging Bull (1980)
Collaborating with director Martin Scorsese once again, Robert De Niro delivered an Oscar-winning performance as Jake LaMotta, a raging bull inside and out of the ring. The physical and emotional transformation De Niro underwent for the role (he gained 60 pounds to play LaMotta post retirement) remains awe-inspiring.
30 Rock, seasons one through seven (2006)
Tina Fey (pictured above) co-stars with Alec Baldwin in this sharp satire of network television, in fact arguably the greatest spoof of TV and corporate America ever produced. (Yes, it’s that perfect.). Fey, a former Saturday Night Live writer and performer, created the show and her comedic reflections of the madness that influence network decisions and executive behavior are masterful. Baldwin is also a hoot as the network chief. Great show!
