Netflix plans to remove 48 TV shows and movies from its streaming lineup on July 1, 2025. Here are the three to watch before they leave, in my humble opinion.
Do The Right Thing (1989)
Spike Lee’s masterpiece stars the director as a pizza delivery employee who tries to navigate a hot summer day in race-torn Brooklyn. The film still provokes controversy for its brutal characterizations of both white and black Brooklynites but it’s an absorbing and often funny look at the deep divide between races and cultures. I saw Do the Right Thing the day it opened in theaters and the effect was visceral with many in the audience leaving the theater clearly unnerved but undeniably entertained. Lee went on to direct more than 30 films (including the sensational Malcom X starring Denzel Washington) but none had the same power and impact on the culture as Do the Right Thing. The film’s terrific supporting cast includes Danny Aiello as the old school pizza shop owner; John Turturro as one of his sons; Rosie Perez as Lee’s girlfriend; Giancarlo Esposito as an urban urchin ready to defend his streets; and real-life husband and wife, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee as two Brooklyn residents who don’t see eye to eye.
The Equalizer 3 (2023)
We’re back with Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua for this likely final installment in The Equalizer series. Washington plays Robert McCall, a former CIA agent who strives to shed a life of guilty feelings by doing good for strangers. Of course, the good includes killing every bad guy in sight, but hey, as Training Day’s Denzel taught us, the ends can justify the means. The third in the Equalizer trilogy touches heartstrings, too, with Dakota Fanning playing a young CIA agent who’s mysteriously lured into McCall’s new world set in Mob-controlled southern Italy. Fanning and Washington were lovely together in 2004’s Man on Fire and it’s great to see the two reunited on screen with a great payoff at the end.
Draft Day (2014)
Kevin Costner stars as a NFL general manager whose task is to improve his club with a series of deals during the college draft. That may sound like a pedestrian storyline for a movie, particularly one starring an A-lister like Costner. But esteemed director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) and Kev team to make it a thrilling ride from start to finish whether you’re a football fan or not.
