Amazon’s Prime Video this week (July 29-August 4, 2024) plans to add 101 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the three most interesting new titles, in my humble opinion:
Fargo (1996)
The Oscar-winning film from the Coen Brothers stars William H. Macy and Frances McDormand (wife to Joel Coen) who both turn in career performances as a bumpkin car salesman and pregnant police chief respectively. Steve Buscemi and Peter Stomare are equal parts funny and creepy as two kidnappers who bungle the job. This is comedy as black as a 6 a.m. 7-Eleven coffee and no film buff should wait another day before seeing it. Brilliant, brilliant stuff from all involved. You betcha!
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Director Quentin Tarantino’s non-linear masterpiece weaves interconnected stories of crime, wit, and dark humor as only he could. And what a cast! Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Ving Rhames, Christopher Walken…it just goes on and on. Pulp Fiction, which has often been copied, even to some degree by Tarantino himself, should be in anyone’s list of the top 10 best movies ever. And if you disagree, allow me to retort!
Traffic (2000)
Director Steven Soderbergh’s brilliant drama on the travails of the war on drugs and its effect on common day Americans. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Michael Douglas as the federal drug czar, Catherine Zeta-Jones as the wife of a cartel boss, Benico del Toro as a Mexican cop who must work both sides of the fence (literally and figuratively), Don Cheadle as a DEA agent and Erika Christensen as Douglas’ drug addicted daughter. Great film with great performances from all aforementioned and more.
Honorable mention to Lisa Frankenstein, One Fight Night, Fatal Attraction, Scarface, Psycho, Three Days of the Condor and The Naked Gun.
