HBO Max Adds 64 New Movies Today: The 3 to Watch

The TV Answer Man – Buy Me a Coffee!
HBO Max today (February 1, 2025) is adding 64 new movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the three to watch, in my humble opinion:
Open Water (2003)
What Kind of Movie: Thriller/Drama
Who’s In It: Blanchard Ryan, Daniel Travis
I’m betting that you’ve never heard of Open Water (or its actors), but the 2003 film from director Chris Kentis is one of the most terrifying and heartbreaking tales you’ll ever see. The film, which is based loosely on a real life story, follows a young couple who become lost in the open water while on a scuba diving excursion. The two are soon surrounded by sharks and they must find a way to survive while clinging to the faint hope of a rescue. This is what Roger Ebert said about Open Water: “Rarely, but sometimes, a movie can have an actual physical effect on you. It gets under your defenses and sidesteps the ‘it’s only a movie’ reflex and creates a visceral feeling that might as well be real.” Watch this movie. You won’t forget it. (By the way, real sharks are used in the movie.)
Malcolm X (1992)
When to Watch: Sunday, February 1
What Kind of Film: Biofilm
Who’s In It: Denzel Washington’s Spike Lee
Spike Lee’s evocative 1992 drama starring Denzel Washington as the 1960s civil rights leader is the director at the peak of his powers (Denzel, too.). The film chronicles the amazing life of Malcolm X from his days as a Detroit drug dealer to his transformation as a religious leader and civil rights icon. Beautiful film in more ways than one.
42 (2013)
What Kind of Movie: Biofilm/Drama
Who’s In It: Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford
Chadwick Boseman (pictured above) stars as Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play Major League Baseball, in this splendid biofilm directed by Brian Helgeland (Legend). The plot is familiar – Robinson’s extraordinary perseverance to keep playing despite daily verbal and physical attacks – but Boseman’s performance breathes new life into the story. Passing at the all-too early age of 43, Boseman was an exceptional actor and he portrays Jackie as a man with flaws as well as amazing attributes, on and off the field. You feel like you finally know Jackie Robinson and you are better for it. Harrison Ford is a hoot in support as Brooklyn Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey.
