Paramount Plus next month (January 2026) plans to add 145 new TV shows and movies to its streaming service. Here are the three to watch, in my humble opinion:

Star Trek Starfleet Academy
When to Watch: January 15 (Two episode premiere)
Who’s In It: Holly Hunter, Robert Picardo, Paul Giamatti

Paramount has the rights to the Star Trek franchise and it plans to ride that horse as long as it can. Star Trek Starfleet Academy, the sixth Star Trek-themed show from Paramount in the last nine years, stars Holly Hunter (pictured above) as the captain of the USS Athena and chancellor of the Starfleet Academy where young cadets compete to be ship officers. The supporting cast includes the great Paul Giamatti as a heavily made-up part Klingon and Robert Picardo as The Doctor, reprising his role from the Star Trek: Voyager series from a time far, far away. Star Trek Starfleet Academy looks like fun and a worthy entry in the franchise.

Coldwater
When to Watch: January 9 (Series Premiere)
Who’s In It: Andrew Lincoln, Ewen Bremner, Indira Varma

Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead) stars as John, a London native who uproots his family after a violent incident, moving to Scotland in search of a more peaceful existence. He soon befriends a neighbor (Ewen Bremner), Tommy, but is alarmed when he starts to exhibit psychotic tendencies. John tries to break his relationship with Tommy but can’t because the man is expert at the art of manipulation and is obsessed with John. The six-episode series, which first aired in Great Britain, could be your next obsession, too.

Landman (Season 2 finale)
When to Watch: January 18
Who’s In It: Billy Bob Thornton, Sam Elliott, Ali Larter, Andy Garcia, Demi Moore

I have written here (a few times) that Landman, which stars Billy Bob Thornton as a ruthless oil company exec, is an excellent show. The first season was pitch perfect. But I need to qualify my earlier comments. And here goes:

What happened to this show? Season two, which has aired seven episodes to date, has been leaking oil from the 1st episode. Silly and stupid subplots now dominate the show. And why cast Demi Moore and Andy Garcia if you’re not going to use them? Was Taylor Sheridan distracted because of his new deal with NBCUniversal?

Okay, now that I got that off my chest. The season finale of Landman is still a show to watch. There are three episodes left (including the January 18 finale) and I have faith that showrunner Sheridan will land the plane. When Landman is good, it’s great so I have faith it will be great again in season two. So, yes, do watch, but don’t say I didn’t warn you if the finale is more about Ali Larter cooking than Andy Garcia getting cooked.
