Ever since the YouTube TV-Disney blackout began early Friday morning, the streamer’s subscribers have debated in online posts over which company is most to blame. However, one U.S. senator says the answer is easy:
It’s President Trump.
“You might not be able to watch Monday Night Football tonight,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) said in a post on X last night. “Why? When companies get too big, they have the power to cut off your favorite channels. That’s what’s happening here. And what’s Trump done about it? He’s let them get away with it.”
Warren did not specifically explain how President Trump could have prevented Disney and Google’s YouTube TV from engaging in a carriage battle, something that TV companies have done for years and in multiple presidential administrations. But she could have been alluding to the fact that FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has not intervened in the fight, something he did do when Fox was in a carriage scrap last August with YouTube TV. The FCC chief sided with Fox, urging Google to settle in a post on X. The two companies settled the dispute just a few days later.
Warren’s comment has drawn a mix of reactions from X users but nearly every respondent to her post said she was overreaching, to put it nicely. (I looked for comments that supported her statement, but had trouble finding them. One user did say: “When government gets too big they have the power to starve you.”
“What are we all entitled to football now? We don’t get TV for free,” wrote ‘Lapis Lazuli.’ “If you don’t like the service, you find another one. Contract negotiation between channels and service providers has been a thing forever. That’s the free market. It’s not that complicated. Stay relevant though.”
Editor’s Note: If you find any X posts in support of Warren’s remarks, please forward them to me. I will gladly post them in an updated version of this article.
