Paramount Plus today (October 1, 2025) added 101 new movies and shows to its streaming lineup. Here are the six to watch, in my humble opinion:
American Gigolo (1980)
The 1980 drama from director/writer Paul Schrader stars Richard Gere (pictured above) as a high-class male escort who gets entangled in a murder mystery while serving the wealthy women of Beverly Hills. The film, which features the lush synthesizer music of Giorgio Moroder, and a driving, balls to the wall opening tune from Blondie (Call Me), does more to announce the beginning of the hedonistic 80s than any other piece of art. American Gigolo also made Gere a star and showed the cinema world that Schrader was more than a writer of great films such as Taxi Driver.
Heat (1995)
Michael Mann’s classic heist film pits master thief Robert De Niro against world-weary detective Al Pacino in a battle for the ages. This is the first film the two acting legends appeared in the same scene together, and while they share the screen for less than 10 minutes, it’s like watching Michael Jordan play Kobe Bryant in their primes. The intensity pours off the screen as they attempt (even if not consciously) to outdo the other. Almost lost in the novelty of having De Niro and Pacino in the same film is Mann’s incredible vision and direction of Heat which holds your attention for nearly three hours as if it were three minutes. It’s a whirlwind of a movie and increasingly getting recognition as one of the best ever.
American Psycho (2000)
The 2000 satirical horror film about a Wall Street broker (Christian Bale) who moonlights as a serial killer is not for all tastes. But if you get the joke, you’ll love this send-up of the young cold mercenaries who sometimes inhabit Manhattan’s financial district. Bale is flawless in the lead and the outstanding supporting cast includes Chloe Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, Jared Leto and Willem Dafoe.
Fight Club (1999)
The 1999 drama from director David Fincher stars Edward Norton as a meek worker-bee who breaks out of his shell (and breaks a few bones) when he joins an underground boxing community. Brad Pitt (pictured above) plays his alter ego/friend who teaches him the ropes while simultaneously (metaphysically speaking) tying him up with them. This is early Fincher at his weirdest (and most brilliant) and you’ll either love this film or hate it. If you love it, watch it again for all the clues you missed the first time.
Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s intense 2012 drama starring Jessica Chastain as a relentless CIA agent who hunts for the masterminds behind the 9/11 attack on America. The film was seen by some as glorifying the extralegal tactics required to obtain leads in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. But it fairly characterizes the pain and zeal felt by the intelligence/military personnel at the time. And Chastain is riveting as a CIA case officer who can’t sit still (literally) until she finds her man. The supporting cast is equally as good with most notable performances from James Gandofini, Chris Pratt, Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke, and Joel Edgerton.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
The Coen Brothers’ flawless neo-western stars Josh Brolin as a good old boy who stumbles upon a jackpot of money but is then pursued by a ruthless, coin-flipping killer, played deliciously by Javier Bardem. (And let’s not overlook the commanding performance of Tommy Lee Jones as the weather-beaten sheriff.) Joel and Ethan Coen have conspired to make cinema brilliance over the years with films such as Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Miller’s Crossing. But there may be no better Coen Brothers film than No Country for Old Men. If you haven’t seen it, start streaming.
