Amazon’s Prime Video today (July 1, 2025) has added 78 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the five to watch, in my humble opinion.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
The Coen Brothers’ flawless neo-western stars Josh Brolin as a good old boy who stumbles upon a jackpot of money but is then pursued by a ruthless, coin-flipping killer, played deliciously by Javier Bardem. (And let’s not overlook the commanding performance of Tommy Lee Jones as the weather-beaten sheriff.) Joel and Ethan Coen have conspired to make cinema brilliance over the years with films such as Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Miller’s Crossing. But there may be no better Coen Brothers film than No Country for Old Men. If you haven’t seen it, start streaming.
Dressed to Kill (1980)
Brian DePalma’s slasher/Hitchcock homage stars Angie Dickinson as a neglected wife whose search for passion in her life turns deadly in the most unlikely of places. Michael Caine plays her suave but suspicious shrink while Mrs. DePalma (at the time), Nancy Allen (pictured above), is deliciously sassy as a hooker with a heart. This is DePalma at the height of his powers, staging suspenseful scenes with such technical proficiency that rival directors watched with jealously.
Licorice Pizza (2021)
The brilliant 2021 comedy/drama from director Paul Thomas Anderson stars Cooper Hoffman (Philip Seymour Hoffman’s son) and rock queen Alana Haim (Haim) as two oddly connected young souls trying to find their place amid the weirdness of Southern California’s San Fernando Valley in the mid-1970s. Bradley Cooper chews the delicious scenery as the real-life movie producer, Jon Peters, who seems obsessed with being Barbra Streisand’s boyfriend (he was) while engaging in rants and rages over every trivial matter. And Sean Penn plays Jack Holden (a William Holden cut-out), a whiskey-swilling veteran actor who never knows when to get off the stage. Licorice Pizza is Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, The Master) at his best and it should have won the 2022 Academy Award for Best Picture. (It was nominated.) PTA shows once again that he’s the Robert Altman of this era, weaving a tale of joy and heartbreak featuring some of the most interesting characters you’ll ever see on screen.
Rocky (1976)
Sylvester Stallone plays the loveable pugilist, Rocky Balboa. The original is the best of the multi Rockys over the years with Sly playing the fighter as a flawed everyman who just wants a chance to hit it big. Carl Weathers is a treat as his nemesis, Apollo Creed (clearly modeled after Muhammad Ali), while Burgess Meredith, Burt Young and Talia Shire make up the colorful cast. (Note: Prime Video today has added all six Rocky films as well as Creed II.)
Gladiator (2000)
With Gladiator II in theaters last year smashing box office records, here’s your chance to catch the original 2000 film starring Russell Crowe as a Roman general who is cast into slavery after a betrayal by the emperor’s son (Joaquin Phoenix). Directed by Ridley Scott, Gladiator is a powerful cinematic feast for the eyes and mind with a legacy-making performance from Crowe.
