Netflix this week (September 29-October 5, 2025) plans to add 78 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the three to watch, in my humble opinion:

Monster: The Ed Gein Story – Netflix Original Series
Release Date: Friday, October 3

If you still have trouble taking showers with the curtain closed after watching the Alfred Hitchcock horror classic, Psycho, you might be further alarmed to hear that Anthony Perkins’ Norman Bates character was based on a true story. Yes, in the 1950s, there was a Wisconsin farmer named Ed Gein whose side gig was murdering women who reminded him of his deceased Mom. This Netflix original series from Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story) chronicles Gein’s bizarre behavior (Charlie Hunnam plays Gein) and how the case caught the attention of Mr. Hitchcock, played here by Tom Hollander. Okay, this may not sound like fun fare, but few tell twisted tales better than Mr. Murphy.

Steve (2025) – Netflix Original Film
Release Date: Friday, October 3

Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) stars as a reform school teacher who struggles to bring sanity to his life and the lives of his wayward students. The Netflix original film opened in theaters earlier this year, capturing mostly positive reviews from the critics.

The Hurt Locker (2008)
Release Date: Wednesday, October 1

The brilliant 2008 Iraqi war drama stars Jeremy Renner as a munitions specialist who’s ready to blow. There have been many films that strive to show the horrors of war after the soldier comes home but few have done it better than The Hurt Locker. Renner’s character becomes addicted to war’s adrenaline rush and is never able to live normally again. It’s a great performance.
