Top New Releases Coming This Weekend to Netflix, Apple TV+, Hulu, Amazon & HBO Max

There will be dozens of new shows and movies coming to the top streaming services this weekend (September 4-7, 2025), but here are the four you definitely don’t want to miss, in my humble opinion:

Task (HBO Original)
Release Date: Sunday, September 7
Mark Ruffalo stars as a FBI agent who’s assigned to head a task force to combat a series of high-profile robberies engineered by what seems like a lowly garbage collector (Tom Pelphrey). The cat-and-mouse seven-episode series, which is already collecting rave reviews, is being compared to HBO’s Mare of Easttown (which stars Kate Winslet), no surprise because Mare’s Brad Ingelsby is the showrunner here, too.

Friendship – HBO
Release Date: Friday, September 5
Tim Robinson stars as a marketing executive whose rooted existence tips over when he falls under the influence of his uber-confident next door neighbor (Paul Rudd). Think Ferris Bueller in adult form (Rudd as Ferris and Robinson as Cameron) and you have Friendship, a winning comedy movie with charm and more insights than you might expect.

Black Bag (2025) – Amazon’s Prime Video)
Release Date: Friday, September 5
Michael Fassbender stars as a British intelligence officer who must investigate the possibility of traitors in the government including his wife, played by Cate Blanchett. Directed by arguably the most underrated director of his time, Steven Soderbergh, Black Bag (Fassbender and Blanchett pictured above) is a taut thriller with characteristic cinematic flourishes from a master auteur; it will keep you guessing until the end. Don’t miss it.

Highest 2 Lowest – Apple TV
Release Date: Friday, September 5
Denzel Washington (pictured above) stars as a music mogul who’s struggling to retain his company in a financial clash with a rival executive. The mogul’s dilemma reaches new heights when he receives an anonymous call that his son has been kidnapped. He then must choose between paying to free his son and saving the company he built from scratch. Directed by Spike Lee, and the first joint (pun intended) effort from Lee and Washington since the terrific Inside Man in 2006, Highest 2 Lowest is a taut thriller with a strong moral message about life and family.
