Is HBO Eliminating Channels Next Month? Will Prices Be Reduced?

By Phillip Swann
The TV Answer Man – Follow me on X.

TV Answer Man, I have read that HBO and Cinemax are shutting down some of their linear channels on August 15. I believe this will affect all cable and satellite customers. Will (cable and satellite providers) lower our bills for this? – Jeff, town withheld.

Jeff, it is true that Warner Bros. Discovery on August 15 will terminate HBO Family and the following Cinemax multiplex channels: ThrillerMax, MovieMax and OuterMax. This will affect all cable and satellite providers that now carry those channels.

The decision continues an industry-wide trend to trim expenses as pay TV subscriber numbers decline due to cord cutting and other factors. (Warner Bros. Discovery also recently announced plans to split the company in two to reduce expenses and streamline operations.)

The bad news continues since there are no indications that any cable or satellite TV providers will cut the price of HBO or Cinemax. In addition to the main channels, HBO and Cinemax will still offer other multiplex feeds such as HBO Comedy, HBOZone, HBO Latino and HBO Signature. The TV providers apparently believe the HBO and Cinemax offerings are still sufficiently attractive to warrant the current prices. Perhaps that will change if more channels are eliminated. (But I doubt it.)

Jeff, I hope that helps. Happy viewing and stay safe!

Cord Cutters News was the first to report that HBO and Cinemax were eliminating the channels.

Not only will they not lower their rates, they will more than likely raise them.
