TV Answer Man, is Amazon getting rid of its free service? I read that they are but I hope they don’t. – Claire, Seattle.
Claire, Amazon has a free streaming service called Freevee which offers hundreds of movies and shows as well as live channels including live feeds of news programs from dozens of local network affiliates. The company is able to offer Freevee for free because it includes ads. However, starting in September, Freevee will be eliminated.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that after Freevee is shuttered, Amazon will offer the entire Freevee programming lineup on its Prime Video app. Only Prime members will have access to the full Freevee offering, but non-Prime members will still be able to watch a large portion of Freevee’s content.
Freevee is a terrific service, particularly for cost-conscious consumers who have cut the cord. But Amazon has determined that moving it to its main Prime Video app will increase interest in both Freevee and Prime Video. In addition, Amazon will likely save money by not operating the Freevee app.
Claire, I hope that helps. Happy viewing and stay safe!
