TV Answer Man, I see that Max has been changed back to HBO Max. How will this affect us subscribers? Will shows get better? – Rick, Easton, Maryland.

Rick, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), the owner of the Max streaming service, announced today that the streamer has officially changed back to HBO Max, its original name which was changed in 2022 soon after David Zaslav became WBD CEO.

The move was expected since May when WBD said the Max/HBO Max switch would happen sometime during the summer.

Why Is Max Becoming HBO Max Again?
Although WBD won’t say it, the change from HBO Max to Max in 2022 was clearly a marketing mistake. HBO had created a strong brand over five decades and consumers associated it with quality and value. Zaslav believed that the solitary Max moniker would communicate that the service also included programming from WBD properties such as Discovery, Turner Classic Movies and CNN. But it appears that HBO’s content was the primary reason for people subscribing, not the other shows.

What Does The Name Change Mean to You?
Answer: Nothing as of now. The service isn’t making any other changes because it’s now called HBO Max. In the coming months, you might see some shuffling of programming to other apps because WBD is splitting into two companies. But as for now, HBO Max is the same as Max.

Rick, I hope that answers your question. Happy viewing and stay safe!
