Hulu today (May 1, 2025) is adding 90 new TV shows and movies to its subscription Video on Demand service. Here are the three to watch, in my humble opinion.

Man on Fire (2004)
Denzel Washington plays John Creasy, a former CIA intelligence agent turned alcoholic who’s hired to protect Pita, the young daughter (Dakota Fanning) of wealthy parents in Mexico City. The seemingly easy gig turns upside down when the daughter is kidnapped in a shootout that leaves Creasy fighting for his life. The subsequent events as Creasy seeks revenge, and the return of the young girl, makes Man on Fire one of the best action pictures of this century. Denzel is magnetism personified as the ruthless former government assassin who employs all his skills to set things right. Christopher Walken is also exceptional as Creasy’s former CIA colleague, as is Fanning as Pita, matching Denzel step for step in several pivotal scenes. The Denzel-Dakota chemistry was renewed last year when the now 30-year-old Fanning had a supporting role in Denzel’s The Equalizer 3. (This time, she played a CIA officer!)

The Insider (1999)
Russell Crowe plays Big Tobacco whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand in director Michael Mann’s retelling of 60 Minutes and CBS News’ struggle to air an expose on the dangers of smoking. Al Pacino plays CBS producer Lowell Bergman who led the fight to put Wigand on the air only to be stifled by network executives, attorneys and even legendary show anchor, Mike Wallace, played by Christopher Plummer. The Mann movie is gripping and taut (even at 158 minutes) and easily the best portrayal of corporate malfeasance and journalistic malpractice ever dared put on screen. Crowe, an Australian, magically channels Wigand’s persona (grew up in New York; lived in Kentucky); you almost forget you’re watching an actor in the role, he’s so good. Pacino is also effective as the frustrated producer although he’s more Al than Lowell. But he’s a movie star; so we’re okay with that.

Mission: Impossible (1996)
Director Brian De Palma’s original Mission Impossible film laid the foundation for the franchise’s success. Tom Cruise as secret agent Ethan Hunt finds himself embroiled in a web of betrayal and deceit. The iconic scenes, such as the daring wire descent into a secure room and the suspenseful train sequence, remain gripping nearly three decades later. Note that the last installment in the series, Mission Impossible 8, will hit theaters this month.

Bonus Picks – Hulu today is also debuting the complete season 22 of the reality hit, Pawn Stars; a documentary on legendary soul singer, James Brown; and the complete season three of Jeopardy! Masters.
