Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, today (May 1, 2025) is adding 73 new TV shows and movies. Here are the three to watch, in my humble opinion.

Inception (2010)
Inception, the 2010 mind-bending sci-fi drama from director Chris Nolan (Oppenheimer) which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a thief who steals information by entering another’s mind. (Maybe why it’s not always wise to be open minded.) Great movie, but if you’re not a chess player, prepared to get lost in the plot a few times.

The Shining (1980)
The chilling horror film from director Stanley Kubrick stars Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall as a dysfunctional couple who decide to caretake a remote resort while it’s closed during the winter. While we say The Shining is a horror film (and it has plenty of jump scares), it’s also a brilliant dark comedy thanks to Nicholson’s tour de force performance as Jack Torrance, a frustrated writer who truly understands that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Duvall is also convincing as the tortured (perhaps on and off the set) wife and little Danny Lloyd is a delight as their son.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
The drama/thriller starring Jodie Foster as a young FBI agent who’s enlists the help of a psychopathic serial killer (Anthony Hopkins in the role of a lifetime) to catch another psychopathic serial killer. Hopkins’ hypnotic performance still gets all the buzz — and not without justification — but don’t sell Foster short for her halting but dedicated Agent Clarice Starling. Her nuanced reactions to Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter makes the madman even more frightening as well as more understandable.

Bonus Pick – Season three of the 100 Foot Wave, an HBO original documentary on a band of surfers and their amazing quest to conquer extraordinary waves. Some breathtaking footage here.

Discovery properties such as HGTV, the Cartoon Network, Turner Classic Movies and HBO. The streamer also carries live sports from TBS, TNT and truTV with its two most expensive packages, which are $16.99 a month and $20.99 a month. The cheapest plan, which includes ads, is $9.99 a month and does not include live sports.
