Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, this month (April 2025) plans to add 105 new releases. Here are the three to watch, in my humble opinion.

Babygirl (2024)
Release Date: April 25
Nicole Kidman stars as a powerful CEO who risks it all when she engages in a torrid affair with a young intern, played by Harris Dickinson. The illicit relationship proves troublesome when the intern begins to push both sexual and corporate boundaries, leaving Kidman gasping (in more ways than one) for a way out. Babygirl was one of the most controversial movie releases of 2024 but Kidman’s performance is a stunner (as usual for arguably the best actress of her generation) and the themes provoke as well as titillate.

Hacks, season four premiere. Max Original
Release Date: April 10
Jean Smart plays Deborah Vance, an aging comedienne (based loosely on Joan Rivers) who must freshen up her act or else face show business extinction. Hannah Einbinder plays Ava Daniels, a young arrogant comedy writer who can’t keep a job because of her stubborn nature. The comedy begins when Deborah hires Ava to write her a new act, but the real charm of Hacks comes from the Mommie/Daughter relationship between the two leads. Smart is terrific as an overbearing performer desperate to stay relevant while Einbinder (the daughter of Saturday Night Live charter member Laraine Newman) is equally good as the rebellious Ava. You’ll laugh and cry with Hacks, sometimes both at the same time. Season four will commence on Thursday, April 10, with the first two episodes.

The Rehearsal, Season 2 – HBO Original
Release Date: April 20
How would you explain the humor of Nathan Fielder to a random stranger? Offbeat? Unpredictable? Brilliant? Hilarious? All would apply and you could throw in several more descriptions. The world’s most inventive comic since Albert Brooks returns for season two of The Rehearsal, a semi-reality show in which Fielder puts real people in real situations for unreal results. In season two, the six-episode series will feature the comedian’s attempt at using role-playing to explain the causes behind airline crashes. Yes, that’s right. Airline crashes. For humorous effect. It’s Nathan Fielder, folks.
