Paramount Plus, the streaming service, this month (February 2025) will add 76 new movies to its lineup. Here are the four best, in my humble opinion:

American Gigolo (1980)
The 1980 drama from director/writer Paul Schrader stars Richard Gere as a high-class male escort who gets entangled in a murder mystery while serving the wealthy women of Beverly Hills. The film, which features the lush synthesizer music of Giorgio Moroder, and a driving, balls to the wall opening tune from Blondie (Call Me), does more to announce the beginning of the hedonistic 80s than any other piece of art. American Gigolo also made Gere a star and showed the cinema world that Schrader was more than a writer of great films such as Taxi Driver. Debuts Saturday, February 1.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
Let’s lighten things up a bit. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off has become the American cinema’s best coming-of-age comedy ever thanks to the perfect performance by Matthew Broderick as the wisecracking and charismatic Ferris. The film, which features Ferris playing hooky from school, serves up everything you want from a comedy and more. And let’s not forget the great supporting work from Alan Ruck as Ferris’ put-upon pal. Fun film! Debuts Saturday, February 1.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Okay, director Rob Reiner may have cribbed a bit from Woody Allen’s Annie Hall, but When Harry Met Sally is still a funny and sweet comedy about the frailties and fickleness of falling in love. Billy Crystal (arguably his best role ever) and Meg Ryan are charming and comedic pitch perfect as the leads and Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby are a delight in support. Debuts Saturday, February 1.

Southpaw (2015)
Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Billy ‘The Great’ Hope, an undefeated light heavyweight champion who never loses in the ring but suddenly loses everything (wife, child) outside of it. This will not go down as the best sports film of all time, but Gyllenhaal is convincing as is the superb supporting cast including Rachel McAdams as his wife and Forest Whittaker as an aging ex-fighter. Debuting February 24. (Available on Netflix until February 20.)
