Amazon’s Prime Video today (September 1, 2024) has added 82 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the five best, in my humble opinion.
Basic Instinct (1992)
Directed by Paul Verhoeven, Basic Instinct is a psychological thriller that explores the dangerous allure of a hedonistic author (Sharon Stone) suspected of murder. Michael Douglas plays the investigating detective who falls headfirst in the honeypot. The film is a classic neo noir that made Stone a star and her tete a tetes with Douglas (written by crazy Joe Eszterhas) are both funny and seductive. Great f—- film, so to speak.
Dressed to Kill (1980)
Brian DePalma’s slasher/Hitchcock homage stars Angie Dickinson as a neglected wife whose search for passion in her life turns deadly in the most unlikely of places. Michael Caine plays her suave but suspicious shrink while Mrs. DePalma (at the time), Nancy Allen, is deliciously sassy as a hooker with a heart. This is DePalma at the height of his powers, staging suspenseful scenes with such technical proficiency that rival directors watched with jealously.
Election (1999)
The satire from director Alexander Payne about a corrupt high school election stars Matthew Broderick as a overqualified teacher who’s outwitted by an overachieving student, played flawlessly by Reese Witherspoon. This is Broderick as his best since Ferris Bueller. Election is a funny, insightful film from an underrated director.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
The 1998 cult comedy from the Coen Bros. features an iconic Los Angeles slacker (Jeff Bridges) named ‘The Dude’ who accidentally becomes the focus of a murder investigation. Only Joel and Ethan Coen could take this farfetched plot and turn it into a cultural mainstay and masterpiece that resonates with multiple generations. The flawless supporting cast includes John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, Julianne Moore, and John Turturro as Jesus, a bowler with a strange fetish for his ball.
The Doors (1991)
Oliver Stone’s 1991 love letter to the legendary 1960s band featuring Val Kilmer channeling lead singer (and part poet, part madman) Jim Morrison. The film is a dizzying and vastly entertaining look at an era in music when anything seemed possible and impossible at the same time. (Psychedelics, man.)
