Peacock Adding Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos to Live Sports In 2026

Streamer Peacock already delivers one of the most realistic and vivid pictures in the industry, particularly for live sports. But the NBC-owned service will soon offer even sharper images – and sound – thanks to a new agreement with Dolby Laboratories.

The two companies just announced that Peacock will be the first streaming service to use Dolby’s full suite of advanced picture and sound innovations.

As part of the agreement, the streamer will add Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos to live sporting events during the year. (Peacock already offers Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos with select movies and TV shows; the streamer also added Dolby Atmos to Sunday Night Football during the 2025 season.)

This is great news for sports fans since NBC and Peacock next month will air both the Super Bowl and the 2026 Winter Olympics, and Major League Baseball starting in April.

“Peacock is raising the bar for what streaming entertainment can be with Dolby,” John Couling, senior vice president of entertainment at Dolby Laboratories, said in a statement. “This partnership reflects our vision to push the boundaries of live sports and entertainment, delivering experiences that truly stand apart. With Dolby, Peacock stands as the premier destination for viewers who expect nothing less than exceptional entertainment at home.”

David Bohunek, senior vice president for global video engineering at NBCUniversal, added: “Our partnership with Dolby ensures that whether our subscribers are streaming a thrilling playoff game, the latest Universal blockbuster, or a critically acclaimed Peacock Original, they’re experiencing it exactly as creators intended – with breathtaking picture and immersive sound that brings every moment to life.” 

What Is Dolby Vision?
Dolby Vision, which was developed by Dolby Laboratories, can enhance the picture quality using High Dynamic Range (HDR). That provides a wider color gamut and improved brightness and contrast.

However, Dolby Vision will not work on your TV unless your TV and/or delivery device is Dolby Vision-enabled.

There is a common misconception that Dolby Vision means 4K, but it’s only an HDR technology. 4K is the picture’s resolution. Dolby Vision cannot change the resolution; it can only heighten the colors, contrast and brightness.

Peacock has does some live sports in 4K although most broadcasts are in 1080p HD.

What Is Dolby Atmos?
Dolby Atmos is an advanced audio technology developed by Dolby Laboratories. Unlike traditional surround sound systems, which use channels and speakers to create a sense of audio directionality, Dolby Atmos introduces an object-based audio system. This means that audio elements can be precisely placed and moved in a three-dimensional space, providing a more immersive and realistic sound experience.

To listen to a sporting event, show or movie with Dolby Atmos, you will need a TV/sound system that is Dolby Atmos-capable. (See your TV’s manual for more details.)

As someone who owns a Dolby Atmos-equipped Home Theater system, I can attest that the technology adds incredible realism to a movie or TV show, often creating the experience that sounds are directly over your head.
