Netflix has obtained the exclusive rights to the 2026 MLB Opening Day game on March 25 between the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants, The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand reports.
The primetime game would be a standalone to open the season with no other MLB contests scheduled that day. The remaining teams would start the season the next day.
Marchand reports that the Opening Day exclusive will be part of a three-year deal between Netflix and MLB which will also include the Home Run Derby and some special events such as the ‘Field of Dreams’ regular season game in Iowa. He writes that the special event games will be shared with NBC and Peacock.
For Netflix, the MLB partnership would be another foray into the special event live sports category. The streamer has been the exclusive carrier of such boxing events as the Paul-Tyson match and the Canelo-Alvarez fight as well as two NFL games on Christmas Day.
Despite Netflix’s relatively inexpensive base plan, which is the ads-included $7.99 a month package, some baseball fans will likely oppose the new deal, saying the Netflix games should be on their regional sports networks or other channels on cable and satellite.
MLB and Netflix have not officially announced the agreement as of this afternoon.
