Peacock to Add 146 New Titles On Monday – Here’s the 6 Best

Peacock on Monday (July 1) plans to add 146 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the six best, in my humble opinion:

Knowing (2009)
The sci-fi/drama film starring an unusually subdued Nicolas Cage as a teacher who stumbles upon a mathematical formula to predict disasters. The burden of knowledge is overwhelming as Cage’s character desperately tries to warn loved ones and others to change their behaviors and plans. Knowing is an intelligent look at the human condition and our need to live freely and without fear.

Hell Or High Water (2016)
Written by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone) and directed by David Mackenzie, this neo noir Western stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster as two bank robbing brothers in modern day Texas who are pursued by two Texas Rangers (Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham). The film is basically Michael Mann’s Heat set in the dusty plains of the New West and that’s a good thing. Hell or High Water offers a fascinating portrait of the meticulous methods of the good guys and bad and Pine and Bridges are fantastic in the Pacino/De Niro roles. A real hidden gem here.

The Big Lebowski (1998)
The 1998 cult comedy from the Coen Bros. features an iconic Los Angeles slacker (Jeff Bridges) named ‘The Dude’ who accidentally becomes the focus of a murder investigation.  Only Joel and Ethan Coen could take this farfetched plot and turn it into a cultural mainstay and masterpiece that resonates with multiple generations. The flawless supporting cast includes John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, Julianne Moore, and John Turturro as Jesus, a bowler with a strange fetish for his ball.

Scarface (1983)
The brilliant Brian De Palma-directed drama stars Al Pacino as Cuban refugee Tony Montana who discovers crime does pay, and exceedingly well, in coke-fueled 1980s Miami. While Scarface may be — okay, is — too violent for some, the film perfectly chronicles the era’s thirst for excess and hedonism through the eyes of Montana. Michelle Pfeiffer is flawless as Montana’s ice-cold, white powder-sniffing moll and the splendid supporting cast also includes Steven Bauer, Robert Loggia, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and F. Murray Abraham. Great movie, and don’t forget to say hello to Tony’s little friend.

Jaws (1975)
The big fish drama from director Steven Spielberg remains one of the tautest and most suspenseful movies ever made with outstanding performances from Roy Scheider as the town sheriff, Richard Dreyfuss and the marine biologist and Robert Shaw as the crafty boat captain. And what a great time to watch (or rewatch) the film with summer just ahead.

Bridesmaids (2011)
Since we picked three dark crime dramas to start, let’s mix in this 2011 comedy starring Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) at the peak of her zany powers as a single woman in her 30s who turns an upcoming wedding into a series of comic misadventures. The flawless supporting cast includes Jon Hamm, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, and for fans still nostalgic for 1970s indie films, the great Jill Clayburgh.
