Hulu today (March 1, 2025) has added 57 new movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the five best, in my humble opinion:

The Social Network (2010): David Fincher at His Best
Director David Fincher’s brilliant take on narcissism, ambition and, ultimately, unrelenting arrogance through the lens of young Mark Zuckerberg as he builds Facebook while shedding friendships and his moral compass. Jesse Eisenberg is flawless as Zuck but don’t forget the fun supporting performances by Justin Timberlake as Napster’s Sean Parker and Armie Hammer as both of the Winkelvoss twins who claimed the Facebook founder ripped them off.
Alien (1979): Best Sci-Fi Film Ever?
Director Ridley Scott’s sci-fi masterpiece redefined the science fiction genre. Sigourney Weaver’s portrayal of Ripley is a tour de force, showcasing both vulnerability and resilience in the face of unimaginable horror. The meticulous attention to detail in the production design, combined with a smart and suspenseful script, will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. And be prepared to look away at the lunch scene. You know the one.
American Hustle (2013): Dazzling Piece of Entertainment
David O. Russell’s brilliant 2013 comedy-drama based on the real-life FBI Abscam sting operation in the 1970s. Christian Bale and Amy Adams star as two con artists who are forced by an FBI agent (Bradley Cooper) to help the agency set up corrupt politicians, including the mayor of Camden, New Jersey, played by Jeremy Renner. The film is a dazzling display of human folly and Russell has never been better. The great cast also includes Jennifer Lawrence, Jack Huston and Robert DeNiro.

LA Confidential (1997): Heroism & Hubris In 1950s LA
The 1997 Curtis Hanson-directed neo-noir drama about corrupt cops in the City of Angels in the 1950s is the best of pulp fiction on screen. Rapier dialogue, over-the-top action, stylish cinematography and juicy performances from Russell Crowe, Guy Pierce, Kevin Spacey and Kim Basinger, among many, many others. It’s based on the James Ellroy novel, which was smartly pared down by Hanson and co-writer, Brian Helgeland. (Although Ellroy didn’t like the film; he’s wrong. It’s great.)
Pulp Fiction (1994): Quentin Tarantino’s Masterpiece
Director Quentin Tarantino’s non-linear masterpiece weaves interconnected stories of crime, wit, and dark humor as only he could. And what a cast! Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Ving Rhames, Christopher Walken…it just goes on and on. Pulp Fiction, which has often been copied, even to some degree by Tarantino himself, should be in anyone’s list of the top 10 best movies ever. And if you disagree, allow me to retort!
