Hulu today (February 1, 2025) has added 63 new movies to its subscription Video on Demand lineup. Here are the four best, in my humble opinion:
Kill Bill, Volume 1 and 2 (2003, 2004)
Quentin Tarantino’s ode to the great martial arts films of the 1970s. Uma Thurman stars as a betrayed assassin who seeks revenge on the crew who tried to kill her. (We’re counting the two films as one because QT does.) The Kill Bill movies may be too gory for some, but Tarantino displays the action with a master’s touch and the supporting cast, which includes Michael Madsen, Lucy Liu, David Carradine, Daryl Hannah and Vivica Fox, is superbly sublime.
You’ve Got Mail (1998)
Twenty-seven years ago, when You’ve Got Mail premiered, the concept of meeting cute (online) felt so innocent, which was reflected in this sweet and satisfying comedy starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The two stars are at their charming best here as they converse anonymously through America Online (remember, everyone? You’ve Got Mail!) while competing in real life in very different roles in the publishing industry. Having a bad day? You’ve Got Mail will put a smile on your face.
Taken (2008)
Liam Neeson plays a former CIA officer with a “particular set of skills” who puts them to good use when his teenaged daughter (Maggie Grace) is kidnapped by human traffickers in France. The plot is a worn movie trope but Neeson, a former boxer in real life, manages to turn it into a thrilling ride with splendid athletic work in the action scenes. Kudos, too, to director Pierre Morel who recently directed Amazon’s action thriller, Canary Black, starring Kate Beckinsale.
Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby (2006)
Director Adam McKay’s hilarious send-up of the NASCAR circuit starring Will Ferrell as a witless but winning driver. Sacha Baron Cohen is Peter Sellers-like funny as a French driver and rival to Ferrell’s Ricky Bobby and the rest of the supporting cast includes Amy Adams, John C. Reilly and Leslie Bibb. Rev your engines and prepare to laugh.
