TV Answer Man, do you know if we should cancel the Sunday Ticket like last year when you told us to and avoid getting billed? – Ernie, New Orleans.

Ernie, you are right. I urged everyone last year to cancel your NFL Sunday Ticket subscription as soon as the regular season ended. And I am doing so again this year!

Why?

NFL Sunday Ticket: Why You Should Cancel Now

This is why you should cancel now before you forget. YouTube will auto renew your 2024 Sunday Ticket subscription at some point this year at the “current retail price.” It’s in the terms of agreement. YouTube doesn’t say on which day the auto renewal will happen, but trust me, it will happen.

That means that when the auto renewal occurs, you will be on the hook for the full 2025 price regardless of what it is. YouTube raised the price by $30 last season and it could raise it again in 2025.

In fact, the streamer could raise it by $500 and you legally would have to pay it under auto renewal. Now that’s not likely to happen, but if it did, there’s nothing you could do about it.

In addition, if your auto renewal goes into effect, you will be ineligible to get any discounted price that YouTube is likely to offer before and during the season.

For example, YouTube TV in 2024 offered the Sunday Ticket for $379 for the base plan while YouTube Primetime Channels, which does not require a YouTube TV subscription, charged $479. However, both services offered discounts to new and returning customers before and during the season. Auto-renewal subscribers could not get those prices. They were stuck with the full 2025 retail price.

By canceling now, your subscription will not auto renew and you will have the flexibility to purchase the 2025 Sunday Ticket at a discount. Also take note that there’s no benefit in auto renewing. YouTube does not give you a discount or any other perk for staying a subscriber from one season to the next.
