Netflix this month (December 2024) plans to add 47 ‘Netflix Original’ TV shows and movies. (A Netflix original title is one that Netflix either funded directly or purchased the rights from another production company so it can offer it exclusively to its streaming audience.) Here are the four most interesting Netflix Original titles in December, in my humble opinion.
Black Doves – Netflix original series.
Keira Knightley stars as a British spy whose reckless love affair puts her and everyone around her in danger. The 6-episode Netflix original series has been compared by one critic to Keanu Reeves’ John Wick which is high praise indeed. I watched the first episode last night and found it intriguing thanks to Knightley’s strong performance as the conflicted spy who wants retribution. Debuts Thursday, December 5.
Carry-On – Netflix original film.
Taron Egerton stars as a TSA agent whose Christmas Eve routine is disrupted when a passenger (Jason Bateman) instructs him not to inspect a mysterious suitcase or he will kill his pregnant girlfriend (Sofia Carson). The cat-and-mouse game begins as Egerton contemplates whether he should alert airport authorities while Bateman says he will raise the stakes if he does. It’s a great premise and the trailer looks equally impressive. Must watch here. Debuts December 13.
Squid Game, season two – Netflix original series.
And debuting the day after Christmas is season two of Netflix’s surprise hit, Squid Game, a drama featuring hundreds of broke contestants who go for broke by risking their lives for cash prizes in a game show. The South Korean-made series is a biting but sometimes inspiring commentary on class warfare and the human survival instinct. Season two picks up the original premise three years later with another do-or-die game. Debuts December 26.
Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was… – Netflix comedy special
Comedian and actor Jamie Foxx experienced a mysterious illness a few years ago that apparently nearly killed him. The star of Ray and In Living Color has never talked about what happened. That is, until December 10 when he will reveal all in this Netflix comedy special. Debuts December 10.
