Hulu tomorrow (November 1, 2024) plans to add 58 new movies to its subscription Video on Demand lineup. Here are the three best, in my humble opinion:
Eddie Murphy: Raw (1987)
Eddie Murphy is one of the most gifted comedians ever but younger Americans may forget that he was once a force of nature on stage and in Saturday Night Live sketches before making a series of unforgettable (and sometimes forgettable) Hollywood movies such as Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hours. Eddie Murphy: Raw, a one-man stand-up show filmed at the Felt Forum in New York City, is a 90- minute showcase of his genius as he skewers such (then) sacred cows as Bill Cosby, Michael Jackson and the sanctity of marriage.
La La Land (2016)
La La Land is guaranteed to lift your spirits and perhaps your feet as well. Directed by Damien Chazelle, the film stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a struggling jazz pianist and actress respectively in cold-hearted Los Angeles. However, their dreams fuel a zest for life that keeps them on their toes, literally and figuratively. A throwback to the great MGM musicals of the 1940s, La La Land is a feast for the eyes (and the soul) and was wholly worthy of its Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
White Men Can’t Jump (1992)
Starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, White Men Can’t Jump tells the story of two street basketball hustlers in Venice Beach who form an unlikely partnership. With its mix of humor and social commentary, this film challenges stereotypes and celebrates the love of the game. And, guess what, Woody Harrelson actually has game. Definitely watch this version and not the Hulu remake with Jack Harlow.
