Peacock, the NBCUniversal-operated streaming service, plans to add 111 new movies on Friday, November 1. Here are the 10 best, in my humble opinion.
Hell Or High Water (2016)
Written by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone) and directed by David Mackenzie, this neo noir Western stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster as two bank robbing brothers in modern day Texas who are pursued by two Texas Rangers (Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham). The film is basically Michael Mann’s Heat set in the dusty plains of the New West and that’s a good thing. Hell or High Water offers a fascinating portrait of the meticulous methods of the good guys and bad and Pine and Bridges are fantastic in the Pacino/De Niro roles. A real hidden gem here.
Casino (1995)
Director Martin Scorsese’s brilliant cinematic essay on the rise and fall of the Mob-controlled Las Vegas stars Robert De Niro as an obsessive gambler named Ace Rothstein who’s hired to operate a casino. Ace’s master plan is soon derailed by his chorus girl wife (played beautifully by Sharon Stone) and a ruthless sidekick (played deliciously over the top by Joe Pesci.) While some critics chafed that Casino did not measure up to Scorsese’s Goodfellas, the 1995 is an iconic classic on its own.
Face/Off (1997)
The action-drama from director John Woo stars John Travolta and Nic Cage as an FBI agent and master criminal (respectively) who switch faces and identities while engaging in a cat-and-mouse chase. Only Woo, Travolta and Cage could pull this off but it’s a rockin’ 133 minutes of action, over-the-top acting, and humor.
The Bourne Collection (3 films)
Peacock is adding the first three Bourne films (The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum) starring Matt Damon as an intelligence agent who seeks vengeance on his former government handlers for a myriad of misdeeds. The two films are action packed with some of the best automobile chase scenes you’ll ever see. Peacock on Friday will also add 2012’s The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner starring but skip that and go with the Damon originals. See our article on how Matt Damon almost didn’t get the part of Jason Bourne.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Bradley Cooper shines in this David O. Russell comedy/drama film as a bipolar teacher named Pat who loses his grip on reality after seeing his wife having sex with a fellow teacher. Once out of a mental institution, Pat attempts to rebuild his life but is soon thrown a curve by a curvaceous young widow (Jennifer Lawrence) whose hold on reality is equally suspect. Cooper and Lawrence are wonderful together in this dysfunctional romcom and Robert De Niro is a hoot as Pat’s mentally uncertain father who lives and dies with the hometown Philadelphia Eagles. Silver Linings Playbook is a great movie that will make you smile, laugh and cry.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
The drama/thriller starring Jodie Foster as a young FBI agent who’s enlists the help of a psychopathic serial killer (Anthony Hopkins in the role of a lifetime) to catch another psychopathic serial killer.
Jurassic Park (1993)
Jurassic Park, the 1993 movie directed by Steven Spielberg, is an absolute masterpiece that continues to awe and captivate audiences even decades after its release. With groundbreaking special effects, a thrilling plot, and memorable performances, this dinosaur-packed adventure remains an enduring classic of the sci-fi genre. Spielberg skillfully balances wonder and terror, immersing viewers in the marvel of a resurrected prehistoric world while weaving a cautionary tale about the dangers of tampering with nature.
The Departed (2006)
The Martin Scorsese 2006 crime drama with Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio playing cat and mouse (and rat) in mob-run Boston.
