Amazon’s Prime Video today is adding 124 new movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the five best, in my humble opinion:
Dr. Strangelove, Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
2024 marks the 60th year since the world was graced with this brilliant satire of Cold War politics from director Stanley Kubrick. Peter Sellers plays three roles, including the psychotic Dr. Strangelove (modeled, some say, after Henry Kissinger) and the president of the United States (modeled, most say, after serial presidential candidate, the effete Adlai Stevenson.) Sellers gets all the love (not totally unjustified) but the great supporting cast also includes George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, and Slim Pickens.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
The Coen Brothers’ flawless neo-western stars Josh Brolin as a good old boy who stumbles upon a jackpot of money but is then pursued by a ruthless, coin-flipping killer, played deliciously by Javier Bardem. (And let’s not overlook the commanding performance of Tommy Lee Jones as the weather-beaten sheriff.) Joel and Ethan Coen have conspired to make cinema brilliance over the years with films such as Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Miller’s Crossing. But there may be no better Coen Brothers film than No Country for Old Men. If you haven’t seen it, start streaming.
Rocky (1976)
Sylvester Stallone plays the loveable pugilist, Rocky Balboa. The original is the best of the multi Rockys over the years with Sly playing the fighter as a flawed everyman who just wants a chance to hit it big. Carl Weathers is a treat as his nemesis, Apollo Creed (clearly modeled after Muhammad Ali), while Burgess Meredith, Burt Young and Talia Shire make up the colorful cast.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Saving Private Ryan stars Tom Hanks as the captain of a World War II unit which must find a single soldier (Matt Damon) while navigating the horrors of war. There’s never been a better film on the sacrifice and unselfishness of America’s military and Hanks is especially good in lead. And the first 15 minutes, which depicts the D-Day invasion, immerses the viewer in battle unlike any scene before or since.
Taxi Driver (1976)
Robert De Niro stars as a New York cabbie in this brilliant character study of urban alienation from director Martin Scorsese. The graphic violence has polarized film critics and fans over the years, but no film has better depicted the rage found in so many American males and explained the reasons why it’s there. De Niro is fascinating as Travis Bickle, the taxi driver, showing him capable of appearing normal and almost suave at one point, only to succumb to his worst instincts after any momentary setback. The superb supporting cast includes Cybill Shepherd as the icy-blonde Travis longs for; Albert Brooks as her coworker; Jodie Foster as an underaged sex worker; Harvey Keitel as her pimp; and Peter Boyle as a fellow driver. Very, very powerful film.
