Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, today (May 1, 2024) added 26 new movies. Here are the three best, in my humble opinion:

Silver Linings Playbook
Bradley Cooper shines in this David O. Russell comedy/drama film as a bipolar teacher named Pat who loses his grip on reality after seeing his wife having sex with a fellow teacher. Once out of a mental institution, Pat attempts to rebuild his life but is soon thrown a curve by a curvaceous young widow (Jennifer Lawrence) whose hold on reality is equally suspect. Cooper and Lawrence are wonderful together in this dysfunctional romcom and Robert De Niro is a hoot as Pat’s mentally uncertain father who lives and dies with the hometown Philadelphia Eagles. Silver Linings Playbook is a great movie that will make you smile, laugh and cry.

Mad Max (1979)
The post-apocalyptic film stars Mel Gibson as a police officer forced to enter survival mode when society becomes lawless due to shortages of critical resources. The movie made Mel a star but don’t forget director George Miller’s visionary storytelling and flawless scene staging. Classic work.

Wonderland (2003)
Val Kilmer stars as the legendary (and cursed) adult star John Holmes in this underrated retelling of the Wonderland drug murders in Los Angeles in 1981. The film, directed by James Cox, offers an intriguing account of the murders and the robbery of drug dealer Eddie Nash from different points of view, allowing the viewers to dissect the truth for themselves. Kilmer is brilliant here as the hapless Holmes with perhaps his third best performance ever (following Tombstone and The Doors.)

Honorable mentions go to Don Jon, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Poltergeist, and The Lighthouse.
