Netflix today has added 30 new movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the three best, in my humble opinion:
Traffic (2000)
Director Steven Soderbergh’s brilliant drama on the travails of the war on drugs and its effect on common day Americans. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Michael Douglas as the federal drug czar, Catherine Zeta-Jones as the wife of a cartel boss, Benico del Toro as a Mexican cop who must work both sides of the fence (literally and figuratively), Don Cheadle as a DEA agent and Erika Christensen as Douglas’ drug addicted daughter. Great film with great performances from all aforementioned and more.
The Nutty Professor (1996)
Eddie Murphy’s homage to the original Jerry Lewis 1963 masterpiece with the former playing multiple roles including a sweet and shy professor who discovers a formula that will turn him into a ladies’ man. (Eddie is incredible here and he should have garnered an Oscar nomination, but that’s another story for another day.)
The Equalizer (2014)
Denzel Washington plays Robert McCall, a former CIA agent who strives to shed a life of guilty feelings by doing good for strangers. Of course, the good includes killing every bad guy in sight. The Antoine Fuqua-directed movie maintains the spirit of the 1980s TV show (starring Edward Woodward) upon which it’s based but it also turns the action knob up to 10. Fun film with Denzel largely repeating his 2004 Man on Fire performance. (And that’s a good thing.)
Honorable mentions go to Patriots Day, Shrek and Public Enemies.
