Why Does the Detroit Tigers’ Streaming Plan Cost So Much?

TV Answer Man, can you explain why the Detroit Tigers’ streaming plan costs $189 when all the other teams are just $99? Come on, man! This is ridiculous. Just because the Tigers had a good season doesn’t mean they are worth so much money!! – Jimmy, Pontiac, Michigan.

Jimmy, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment today announced that it’s creating Detroit SportsNet which will be the new home of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings. The channel/streaming service will broadcast the Tigers games this season and will begin producing the Red Wings games with the 2026/27 season.

The cost of Detroit SportsNet is $189.99 annually or $19.99 a month. Jimmy, you’re right that most MLB teams are now offering streaming plans for $99 a season so the $189.99 may seem a bit steep. (Yes, despite the Tigers’ playoff position in 2025.) However, the plan is more expensive because it also includes the Red Wings while the $99 plans just include the MLB team.

And if you’re wondering why both the Tigers and Red Wings are bundled in this plan, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment owns both teams.

Last note: Ilitch Sports + Entertainment said it expects to announce cable and satellite carriage deals in the coming weeks so you can watch the Tigers via a pay TV service as well.

You can learn more about how to order the Tigers and Red Wings here. But if you’re a cable or satellite subscriber, you might want to wait to see if your provider adds the new Detroit channel to your plan by Opening Day.

Jimmy, I hope that answers your question. Happy viewing and stay safe!
