MLB Extra Innings: Do You Need an ESPN Sub to Get MLB TV For Free?

TV Answer Man, I am a DIRECTV subscriber and I get Extra Innings every year and it comes with MLB TV. Do you know if I will have to get the ESPN Unlimited app to get MLB TV through Extra Innings? – Carl, St. Paul, Minnesota.

 

Carl, ESPN this week began selling the MLB TV out-of-market plan on its ESPN Unlimited app and ESPN web site. (The sports network is the new home of MLB TV, but you can still watch the plan’s games on the MLB app as well.)

 

Whether you watch MLB TV on the ESPN or MLB app, new MLB TV subscribers must sign up for the one month free trial of ESPN Unlimited. You can cancel anytime and maintain your MLB TV sub. But you have to sign up which has prompted many fans to accuse the league and network of trying to trick people into eventually paying for ESPN. Their argument is that many people often forget to cancel free trials before they expire and therefore wind up paying at least for a month of service.

 

Existing MLB TV subscribers – those who subscribed last season and did not cancel Auto Renewal – do not have to sign up for ESPN. But what about fans who get MLB Extra Innings through their cable or satellite provider? Extra Innings includes MLB TV for free but will you now have to sign up for ESPN?

 

Answer: No. You will still get MLB TV for free with Extra Innings but you will not have to get the ESPN free trial.
