Paramount Plus to Add 130 New Movies In January 2026: The 7 to Watch

Paramount Plus gets the lion’s share of attention for its original series such as Dexter, Landman and MobLand. But the streamer is also the home of a large library of movies, both recent and classic. This month, in fact, Paramount Plus will add 130 new films to its streaming service. And here are the seven to watch, in my humble opinion:

Baby Driver (2017)
What Kind of Movie: Action/Drama
Who’s In It: Angel Elgort, Jon Hamm, Kevin Spacey
If you’re looking for a movie to get your heart racing, Baby Driver stars Ansel Elgortas a mentally deficient getaway driver for a crime crew populated by a murderer’s row of superb supporting players – Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Jon Bernthal and Eiza Gonzalez. The team’s plan to pull off a heist backfires, leaving Elgort’s character at odds with the group and looking for a fast avenue out. Directed by Edgar Wright, Baby Driver is an inventive and action-packed crime drama flavored with some delicious scenery chewing performances. Great filmmaking on display here. And, boy, do we miss Spacey in roles like this.

Zodiac (2007)
What Kind of Movie: Drama
Who’s In It: Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr.

The David Fincher-directed thriller about the notorious real-life serial killer in the 1970s Bay Area stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a San Francisco newspaper cartoonist who becomes obsessed with the hunt. Fincher shrewdly chronicles how one man’s thirst for the truth can become all consuming while simultaneously displaying a similar impact one evil man can have on a city of millions. Brilliant film with great performances from Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey, Jr., his newsroom colleague, and Mark Ruffalo as the lead cop.

Blue Chips (1994)
What Kind of Movie: Sports Drama
Who’s In It: Nick Nolte, Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway

Blue Chips provides a gritty look at the dark side of college basketball recruiting, starring Nick Nolte as a college coach who faces ethical dilemmas. This film exposes the pressures faced by coaches, players, and the compromises made in the pursuit of success. The film’s realism is enhanced with the use of real-life NBA players Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway in key roles. Former Boston Celtics great Bob Cousy plays the college’s athletic director. (And he never misses!)

Election (1999)
What Kind of Movie: Satire, Comedy
Who’s In It: Matthew Broderick, Reese Witherspoon

The satire from director Alexander Payne about a corrupt high school election stars Matthew Broderick as a overqualified teacher who’s outwitted by an overachieving student, played flawlessly by Reese Witherspoon. This is Broderick as his best since Ferris Bueller. Election is a funny, insightful film from an underrated director.

Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
What Kind of Movie: Drama
Who’s In It: Jessica Chastain, Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke, James Gandolfini

Director Kathryn Bigelow’s intense 2012 drama starring Jessica Chastain as a relentless CIA agent who hunts for the masterminds behind the 9/11 attack on America. The film was seen by some as glorifying the extralegal tactics required to obtain leads in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. But it fairly characterizes the pain and zeal felt by the intelligence/military personnel at the time. And Chastain is riveting as a CIA case officer who can’t sit still (literally) until she finds her man. The supporting cast is equally as good with most notable performances from James Gandofini, Chris Pratt, Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke, and Joel Edgerton.

Serpico (1973)
What Kind of Movie: Urban Drama
Who’s In It: Al Pacino, Tony Roberts, F. Murray Abraham

The drama is based on the real-life New York police officer Frank Serpico who exposed widespread corruption on the force. Al Pacino is at his messianic best as Serpico in this iconic film directed by Sidney Lumet. But the supporting cast is overflowing with some great New York-based actors including John Randolph, Judd Hirsch, Tony Roberts and F. Murray Abraham.

Southpaw (2015)
What Kind of Movie: Sports Drama
Who’s In It: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Billy ‘The Great’ Hope, an undefeated light heavyweight champion who never loses in the ring but suddenly loses everything (wife, child) outside of it. This will not go down as the best sports film of all time, but Gyllenhaal is convincing as is the superb supporting cast including Rachel McAdams as his wife and Forest Whittaker as an aging ex-fighter.
