HBO Max this week (October 6-12, 2025) plans to add 15 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here’s the one to watch, in my humble opinion.

The Substance (2024)
Release Date: Friday, October 10

Demi Moore stars as an over-the-hill actress who turns to a mysterious underground drug to create a younger embodiment of herself. After taking the drug, and inhabiting the body of a young and vibrant female (Margaret Qualley, pictured above), she suddenly becomes the hottest thing in TV. However, flushed with fame, the younger self soon plots to eliminate the older version.

The Substance is an exciting, funny and thought-provoking satire of Hollywood’s addiction to youth and Moore and Qualley are absolutely fantastic, as is Dennis Quaid as a pusillanimous TV executive. The film is so well done that at no time do you question the science behind the Twilight Zoneish plot; you just go with it because it’s so much fun. (I first watched The Substance when it aired on the streaming service, Mubi, and I look forward to watching it again this week.) Kudos to writer/director Coralie Fargeat for a splendid film!
