Amazon’s Prime Video this week (August 26-September 1, 2024) plans to add 86 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the three most interesting new titles, in my humble opinion:

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power S2 (2024)
Season two of Amazon’s original (and very expensive) Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will debut this month. Based on the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, Rings of Power tells the tale of the second age of Tolkien’s Middle Earth when elves and men must unite to stop evil forces, personified by the Dark Lord Sauron. The show, which reportedly has cost Amazon well over $1 billion in licensing and production costs, was supposed to match HBO’s Game of Thrones myth for myth. But the response to season one was mixed although there’s no denying its beauty and sophisticated scene designs. Season two debuts on Thursday, August 29.

Dressed to Kill (1980)
Brian DePalma’s slasher/Hitchcock homage stars Angie Dickinson as a neglected wife whose search for passion in her life turns deadly in the most unlikely of places. Michael Caine plays her suave but suspicious shrink while Mrs. DePalma (at the time), Nancy Allen, is deliciously sassy as a hooker with a heart. This is DePalma at the height of his powers, staging suspenseful scenes with such technical proficiency that rival directors watched with jealously. Debuts Sunday, September 1.

The Big Lebowski (1998)
The 1998 cult comedy from the Coen Bros. features an iconic Los Angeles slacker (Jeff Bridges) named ‘The Dude’ who accidentally becomes the focus of a murder investigation.  Only Joel and Ethan Coen could take this farfetched plot and turn it into a cultural mainstay and masterpiece that resonates with multiple generations. The flawless supporting cast includes John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, Julianne Moore, and John Turturro as Jesus, a bowler with a strange fetish for his ball. Debuts Sunday, September 1.
