YouTube TV & NBC Sign Short-Term Agreement; Blackout Avoided For Now

YouTube TV and NBC have reached a short-term extension that will allow the live streamer to continue carrying the network’s channels while negotiations for a long-term deal continue.

The deadline for a new agreement was set to expire at midnight last night. But in a midnight post at its web site, YouTube TV confirmed a short-term deal had been signed.

“We’ve reached a short-term extension to avoid disruption to our service while we work toward a new agreement with NBC Universal,” the post states. “We appreciate our subscribers’ patience while we negotiate on their behalf.”

The length of the short-term agreement was not disclosed. Often in carriage fights, short-term extensions lead to long-term deals because it means the companies are close to a settlement. However, a blackout could still occur if the two sides break down during the discussions for a longer pact.

YouTube TV, which is owned by Google, and NBC, which is owned by Comcast, are fighting over how much the streamer should pay to carry the channels. In addition, YouTube TV wants to add the NBC-owned Peacock streaming service to its lineup.
