TV Answer Man, does Fubo really have more sports than YouTube TV for the same price? – Roger, town withheld.
For those not familiar with Fubo (formerly known as FuboTV), it’s a live streaming service that offers more than 200 channels in plans that start at $84.99 a month. Fubo this month also launched a sports genre plan for $56 a month that includes more than 20 national sports and news channels.
YouTube TV, also a live streaming service, offers more than 100 channels in a base plan that costs $82.99 a month. (Both streamers are now offering discounts for the first month of service.)
So the monthly price for their base packages are very close, but which one offers more sports, you ask?
The short answer is Fubo.
Fubo carries the network affiliates (ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox) in most markets. (You can see a list of the markets here.) That’s important because the networks have the rights to many high-profile events such as NFL and MLB games, NASCAR races, the prestigious golf tournaments and so on. The streamer also carries ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, FS2, the NFL Network, beIN Sports, CBS Sports Network, Big Ten Network, the Golf Channel, Speedvision, Tennis Channel, Big Ten Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, MLB Network, Swerve Sports, ACC Network, NFL RedZone, ESPNU, ESPNews, SEC Network, Outside, Stadium, Origin Sports, and its own sports channel, Fubo Sports Network, among other niche networks. (Some of the channels may require the Fubo sports add-on plan for an extra $10.99 a month.)
That’s a lot of sports and you can throw in that Fubo carries more than 30 regional sports networks.
YouTube TV has most of the national sports networks listed above as well as local channels in nearly every market. But there are some notable omissions: No MLB Network. No NHL Network. And no regional sports networks (RSN) in most markets.
If you’re a rabid sports fan, the absence of the official channels for Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League – plus perhaps not having your local RSN – is a bit much to take. YouTube TV helps ease the pain by being the exclusive carrier of the NFL Sunday Ticket but it arguably falls short in the other seasons.
So, bottom line: Yes, Fubo has more sports for roughly the same price. However, take note that Fubo does not have TNT or TBS, which offer a slew of NBA, NHL and MLB games. And YouTube TV does have them.
If the NFL Sunday Ticket (and TNT and TBS) are important to you, you could excuse YouTube TV’s decision not to invest in RSNs and other sports niche channels and subscribe to the Google-owned service.
Or you could get the Sunday Ticket separately via YouTube Primetime Channels, keep your Fubo subscription, and get live sports from TNT and TBS with a $16.99 a month subscription to HBO Max.
Roger, I hope that answers your question. Happy viewing and stay safe!
