Amazon’s Prime Video today (September 1, 2025) has added 38 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the three to watch, in my humble opinion:
Rain Man (1988)
Tom Cruise stars in this Barry Levinson-directed comedy/drama about a hustler (Cruise) who kidnaps his autistic long-lost older brother (Dustin Hoffman) when he learns their late father left an entire inheritance to him. The film becomes a lesson in blood ties and personal awakenings when the two set out on a cross- country trip to Los Angeles. In lesser hands, and a lesser cast, Rain Man could have resulted in a run-of-the-mill buddy movie albeit with a twist (autism.) But Cruise and Hoffman are so great together that their relationship touches your heart as well as offer some life lessons. Levinson also shows why he was one of the great directors of the 1980/90s (although highly underrated) with some fabulous set pieces (particularly the Vegas scenes). Great film!
Casino (1995)
Director Martin Scorsese’s brilliant cinematic essay on the rise and fall of the Mob-controlled Las Vegas stars Robert De Niro as an obsessive gambler named Ace Rothstein who’s hired to operate a casino. Ace’s master plan is soon derailed by his chorus girl wife (played beautifully by Sharon Stone) and a ruthless sidekick (played deliciously over the top by Joe Pesci.) While some critics chafed that Casino did not measure up to Scorsese’s Goodfellas, the 1995 is an iconic classic on its own.
Friday Night Lights (Seasons one through five)
Kyle Chandler (pictured above) hits career peak as a West Texas high school coach who must mold a group of teen misfits into becoming state champions while he sidesteps the conflicting obstacles of local boosters and educational scolds. Connie Britton is his loving but wary wife and the incredible chemistry between the two result in one of television’s most endearing but accurate portraits of the realities of marriage. But I’m not done. Friday Night Lights also was a showcase for a sensational cast of young adults in the HS roles, particularly Taylor Kitsch as the charismatic FB Tim Riggins; Minka Kelly as Lyla, the devilish daughter of booster Buddy Garrity; Adrianne Palicki as Tyra Collette; Sinners star Michael B. Jordan as QB Vince Howard; and Jesse Plemons as Landry Clarke. Friday Night Lights was a great show, one of the greatest ever, and you don’t need to be a football fan to enjoy it. If you’ve never seen it, I envy you. Start today with season one and you won’t stop streaming.
