Netflix next month (May 2025) plans to add 46 new movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the four to watch, or rewatch, in my humble opinion:
American Gangster (2007)
The 2007 crime drama from director Ridley Scott stars Denzel Washington as real-life Harlem drug kingpin Frank Lucas and Russell Crowe as the cop who brings him down. Denzel is at his charismatic best as the crime boss; you can’t take his eyes off him. And Crowe is equally good as the randy but relentless detective. (And there are few directors better than Ridley Scott.) Masterful work all around. Debuts May 1.
American Graffiti (1972)
American Graffiti, directed by George Lucas, is a nostalgic masterpiece that brilliantly captures the essence of teenage life in the early 1960s. Set against the backdrop of a small Californian town on the cusp of change, the film takes its audience on a memorable ride through one summer night, following a group of high school graduates (Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams, among others) as they navigate the challenges of growing up and the uncertainty of the future. It says here this is Lucas’ best film; yes, even better than Star Wars. And don’t forget Paul Le Mat and Harrison Ford. Love this movie. Debuts May 1.
The Equalizer 2 (2018)
We’re back with Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua for the second installment in the Equalizer trilogy. Washington plays Robert McCall, a former CIA agent who strives to shed a life of guilty feelings by doing good for strangers. Of course, the good includes killing every bad guy in sight, but hey, as Training Day’s Denzel taught us, the ends can justify the means — and make for some great entertainment. Debuts May 1.
Burn After Reading (2008)
The Coen Bros. screwball comedy/drama stars Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand as amateur espionage traders with fun supporting performances from George Clooney, John Malkovich and Richard Jenkins. While this is not the best Coen, better than average Coen is better than most anything else. Debuts May 1.
