TV Answer Man, will The Players Championship golf tournament be in 4K on DIRECTV? – Tony, Las Vegas.
Tony, The Players Championship golf tournament will start tomorrow (March 13, 2025) with round one at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The Golf Channel will handle the coverage on Thursday and Friday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET on each day. NBC will pick up the broadcast with round three on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET and on the final round on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET.
But will the tournament coverage be available in 4K, you ask?
Answer: Yes. NBC will offer an upscaled 4K feed of each day’s broadcast.
How Can You Watch the Players Championship In 4K?
YouTube TV, DIRECTV and DIRECTV Stream have confirmed they will carry the 4K broadcast on their special 4K channels. More TV providers may offer it as well so check your on-screen guide for updates. The NBC 4K coverage will not be available on the NBC app or Peacock.
Update: Comcast’s Xfinity TV plans to show the tournament in 4K.
Update #2: DIRECTV Stream did not show the tournament in 4K on Thursday. A DIRECTV spokesman tells The TV Answer Man that the company is investigating why it was not in 4K today but adds that it will be in 4K tomorrow (Friday).
Update#3: The DIRECTV spokesman says Stream will NOT air the tournament in 4K on Friday but will on Saturday and Sunday.
What Does Upscaled 4K Look Like?
NBC’s 4K live sports broadcasts are upscaled from 1080p HD. Upscaling is the process when one video format is converted to another. The network takes the 1080p signal and converts it to a 4K format. Upscaling 4K is not considered as good as native 4K, but it’s usually a visible improvement over a high-def image.
Who Is the Favorite to Win the Tournament?
Scottie Scheffler is the favorite at +400, which means you would win $400 for a $100 bet if he won. Rory McIlroy is second at +1000 while Collin Morikawa is third at +1400. (The odds are from DraftKings.)
Is Tiger Woods Playing In the Tournament?
No, Tiger passed on the tournament due to injuries and the recent death of his mother.
