Netflix this month (March 2025) plans to add 29 new TV movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the three you definitely don’t want to miss, in my humble opinion:

Do The Right Thing (1989) – Spike Lee’s Timeless Masterpiece
Spike Lee’s masterpiece stars the director as a pizza delivery employee who tries to navigate a hot summer day in race-torn Brooklyn. The film still provokes controversy for its brutal characterizations of both white and black Brooklynites but it’s an absorbing and often funny look at the deep divide between races and cultures. I saw Do the Right Thing the day it opened in theaters and the effect was visceral with many in the audience leaving the theater clearly unnerved but undeniably entertained. Lee went on to direct more than 30 films (including the sensational Malcom X starring Denzel Washington) but none had the same power and impact on the culture as Do the Right Thing. The film’s terrific supporting cast includes Danny Aiello as the old school pizza shop owner; John Turturro as one of his sons; Rosie Perez as Lee’s girlfriend; Giancarlo Esposito as an urban urchin ready to defend his streets; and real-life husband and wife, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee as two Brooklyn residents who don’t see eye to eye. Debuts on Netflix on March 1.

The Electric State – Netflix Original
Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) returns to Netflixland in this sci-fi movie about a young woman who journeys across the American West to find her brother following a devastating war between humans and robots. Chris Pratt plays a smuggler who accompanies her. Directed by the Russo Brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War), The Electric State is sure to deliver top-notch action and every available CGI effect thanks to Netflix’s largesse. Debuts on Netflix on March 14.

Chaos: The Manson Murders – Netflix Original
Okay, let’s get crazy. Errol Morris, the maker of such thought-provoking documentaries as The Thin Blue Line, The Fog of War, and the Unknown Known, is back with a fascinating POV on Charles Manson and the murders committed by his ‘family’ in 1969. Sure, you say, another Manson documentary?! Who needs that?! Oh, but there’s never been one like this. Morris takes a deep dive in the growing belief that Manson was trained by the Central Intelligence Agency as part of the agency’s secret mind-control division, known as MK-Ultra. The theory is that the CIA fed Manson with mind-control drugs and techniques which the cult leader then used to manipulate his followers. The CIA was interested in Manson, so goes the story, because top officials believed they could learn from him how to make people do things they otherwise would not.

Tom O’Neill, a veteran entertainment reporter, who is interviewed in the documentary, spent a few decades researching the connection between Manson and the CIA and he concluded that it all was true. His book, CHAOS: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties, is the basis for the Morris doc.

Morris himself is no stranger to investigating the CIA’s strange doings decades ago. (Maybe decades ago?)  His Netflix fictional film, Wormwood, chronicles the mysterious death of a CIA scientist who was involved in MK-Ultra in the 195os. How did he die? He jumped (or fell) out of a 13th floor window of a hotel in New York.

Didn’t I tell you it was going to get crazy in here?

Editor’s Note: I watched Chaos: The Manson Murders last week and found it to be entertaining and thought-provoking albeit short on conclusive evidence that Manson was connected to the CIA. Morris is a master documentarian, and I highly recommend you also check out his other works particularly The Thin Blue Line and The Fog of War. Chaos: The Manson Murders debuts on Netflix on Friday, March 7.
