TV Answer Man, do you know if ESPN will have any of the Australian Open tennis matches in 4K like they did last year? – Gene, Pittsburgh.
Gene, ESPN’s networks including ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN Desportes and ESPN+ are providing daily High-Definition coverage of the Australian Open tennis tournament through January 26. You can see an ESPN TV schedule here.
The sports network last year provided some Australian Open matches in 4K including the semifinals and finals. The 4K coverage was available on select TV providers including YouTube TV and DIRECTV.
So, with the semifinals and finals coming this weekend, will ESPN offer 4K broadcasts this year along with its high-def simulcasts?
The TV Answer Man asked ESPN yesterday and a spokesperson said the answer is no. No 4K broadcasts of the Australian Open this year from ESPN.
The spokesperson did not offer a reason why the network won’t provide the tournament in 4K this year. (ESPN did offer last night’s college football championship game in upscaled 4K. Ohio State defeated Notre Dame, 34-23 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The network is also expected to provide college basketball games in 4K in the coming weeks.)
Gene, hope that helps. Happy viewing and stay safe!
