Netflix this week (December 1-7, 2024) plans to add 35 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the three most interesting, in my humble opinion:
30 for 30 Documentaries
Netflix yesterday added six more 30 for 30 documentaries originally broadcast by ESPN. The new additions include an account of the take-no-prisoners reign of the Detroit Pistons in the 1990s (“Bad Boys”); a look at Reggie Miller’s incredible 3-point flurry against the New York Knicks in the same decade (“Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs The New York Knicks”); and a tribute to the NBA’s greatest rivalry of all time (“Celtics/Lakers: The Best of Enemies”). The sports documentary has become a staple of nearly every major streaming service and sports-related network but no one does it better than ESPN. 30 for 30 chronicles past iconic events with such vivid detail and emotion that they make you wish you could transport back to relive them in real time.
The six new 30 for 30 documentaries debuting Monday, December 2:
30 for 30: Bad Boys
30 for 30: Celtics/Lakers: The Best of Enemies
30 for 30: Sole Man
30 for 30: This Magic Moment
30 for 30: This Was the XFL
30 for 30: Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks
Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s intense 2012 drama starring Jessica Chastain as a relentless CIA agent who hunts for the masterminds behind the 9/11 attack on America. The film was seen by some as glorifying the extralegal tactics required to obtain leads in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. But it fairly characterizes the pain and zeal felt by the intelligence/military personnel at the time. And Chastain is riveting as a CIA case officer who can’t sit still (literally) until she finds her man. The supporting cast is equally as good with most notable performances from James Gandofini, Chris Pratt, Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke, and Joel Edgerton. Debuts Sunday, December 1.
Black Doves (Netflix Original)
Keira Knightley stars as a British spy whose reckless love affair puts her and everyone around her in danger. The 6-episode Netflix original series has been compared by one critic to Keanu Reeves’ John Wick which is high praise indeed. Debuts Thursday, December 5.
