Netflix, Hulu, Max, Peacock and Amazon’s Prime Video this weekend (November 21-24, 2024) plan to add 54 new TV shows and movies to their streaming lineups. Here are the five most interesting, in my humble opinion:
A Man On the Inside – Netflix Comedy
Just when you thought you didn’t need another Ted Danson comedy, Netflix serves up this charming series featuring the Cheers (and dozens of other shows) star as a retired professor who’s hired to be a spy at a retirement home. The residents include Sally Struthers (All in the Family) and the trailer actually looks good. Debuts on Thursday, November 21.
Based On a True Story (Season two) – Peacock
The Peacock original comedy/thriller series, which is not based on a true story, returns for a second season with Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as a down-on-their-luck married couple who start a podcast about a serial killer which includes interviews with the actual serial killer. The ‘true crime’ farce may sound a bit farfetched but Cuoco and Messina have chemistry and it says here Cuoco is a true comedy star and always worth watching. Season two debuts on Peacock on Thursday, November 21. Season one now available on Peacock.
Ambulance (2022) – Peacock
Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II play adopted brothers who hijack an ambulance after robbing a bank. The scheme goes awry when they have to take a paramedic and cop hostage and the city of Los Angeles comes down on their heads. Directed by action king Michael Bay, Ambulance serves up a tense and thrilling ride with great performances from the leads and Eiza Gonzalez as the paramedic. Debuts on Peacock on Saturday, November 23.
The Sex Lives of College Girls, Season 3 (Max Original)
Co-written by The Office’s Mindy Kaling, the Max original series follows four 18-year-old coeds as they navigate academic life while exploring their budding sexualities. In the wrong hands, so to speak, The Sex Lives of College Girls could have been a cheap and exploitative device to woo young viewers. However, in the hands of the witty Kaling, it’s only partially cheap and exploitative. It’s also very funny and occasionally a profound discussion of the difficulties of transitioning from teen to adult. Season three debuts on Max on Thursday, November 21. Seasons one and two now available on Max.
Southpaw (2015) – Hulu
Jake Gyllenhaal (again) stars as Billy ‘The Great’ Hope, an undefeated light heavyweight champion who never loses in the ring but suddenly loses everything (wife, child) outside of it. This will not go down as the best sports film of all time, but Gyllenhaal is convincing as is the superb supporting cast including Rachel McAdams as his wife and Forest Whittaker as an aging ex-fighter. Debuts on Hulu on Sunday, November 24.
